When we started our business, it came with the thought of serving others. Bringing some good into the world by means of honest business practices, caring for others before sales, genuine love of wholesome products and doing something that makes us happy.
One of the reasons we love attending the Phillippi Farmhouse Farmers Market is the diversity of attendees. Some weeks we have an overwhelming support from the Menonite Community, Some weeks the homeschooling community visits. It's always neat to see the different walks of life enjoy the community spirit that Farmers Markets promote.
Opening week of Phillippi was no different this week! The market was open roughly an hour, a large bus rolls into the parking lot. Out steps more than 50 Buddist Monks, beautifully dressed in their burnt orange and maroon red. At the time, I was unaware that they'd asked permission to visit and give the market a blessing for success this season. They were led by a gentleman ringing a small brass plate through the market. Each carried their traditional basket or bowl, should someone feel inclined to give.
It's not our first time coming across the Buddists locally. After seeing them a time or two at other markets, I went and read about them and what they are about. I had learned they arent allowed to make, carry or use money. (Vow of poverty) They are able to say minimal words, and move with intent of prayer and meditation. Providing them with what you have to offer, is said to bring good karma to the gifter and helps them further their study and works for the betterment of man. There are parts of the Buddist religion that we resonate with, not only as a business but people.
I had 3 Oddment Soap packs with me, so I chose 3 people randomly in the line to gift. Each bowed thwir heads, with a silent thank you. I returned the head bow with a smile.
When we give, we never expect something in return. Thats the true spirit of giving. You give because you're called to, or because you want to do something nice or help.
The person in the middle of the 3, left the line and came over to me. Holding his hands in front of him he said "Your gift is heart received, I wish you many blessings in business & life". He then reached in his basket and gave me a banana. I took the banana in both hands, holding it up slightly. I bowed my head and said than you. He smiled wide, turning away.
I'd like to think that not all the gifts we receive in life are tied to money. Sometimes gifts of the greatest love come in the form of earnest prayers, we'll wishes and true feelings to see others do well.
I often think that if others gave freely to eachother in non-money related ways, the world would be better for it. Love your fellow man and want the best for them. 📿🧘🍌
