Proud owner of an Apotheca Brown Real Sea Sponge?
Let's Learn to Care for it!
1. Wash sponge with soapy warm water before 1st use
2. When not in use, store sponge in a dry place
3. To sanitize & refresh your sponge you can use a 50/50 vinegar & water mix.
4. Soak sponge for 20 minutes & rinse well.
5. NEVER use industrial cleaners. This will ruin your sponge (No bleach, ammonia, rubbing alcohol, etc.)
Tarpon Springs History
It's important to treat your sponges with the same care you give your skin. Avoid leaving them in the sun (especially for those who use outdoor showers), and refrain from washing them with harsh chemicals. Remember to keep them clean and dry when not in use.
Tarpon Springs, located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back centuries. Here is a brief overview of the history of Tarpon Springs:
Pre-Colonial Era: Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area now known as Tarpon Springs was inhabited by the Tocobaga Native American tribe. The Tocobaga thrived along the coast, engaging in fishing and trading activities.
19th Century: In the 1800s, the area saw the arrival of pioneer settlers. The name "Tarpon Springs" originated from the abundant tarpon fish found in the nearby waters. The first permanent settler was W. J. Wentworth, who arrived in 1867 and established a post office and general store.
Greek Immigration and Sponge Diving: Tarpon Springs experienced a significant influx of Greek immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These immigrants, primarily from the island of Kalymnos and other Greek islands, brought with them the traditional practice of sponge diving.
The sponge industry flourished in Tarpon Springs due to the region's favorable climate and abundant sponge beds. Greek divers played a crucial role in harvesting sponges from the ocean floor using specialized diving techniques. By the early 1900s, Tarpon Springs had become the sponge capital of the United States.
Greek Culture and Influence: The Greek community in Tarpon Springs preserved its cultural heritage and traditions, establishing Greek Orthodox churches, schools, and social organizations. The city's Historic District, with its vibrant Greek architecture and iconic Dodecanese Boulevard, stands as a testament to this enduring influence.
Tourism and Present Day: Tarpon Springs grew in popularity as a tourist destination in the mid-20th century. Visitors were drawn to the city's Greek heritage, sponge docks, and the unique experience of witnessing sponge divers at work. Today, Tarpon Springs continues to be a thriving tourist destination, offering visitors a blend of history, culture, delicious Greek cuisine, and charming waterfront vistas.
